Obituary: Although previous reports of my death were exaggerated, I now serve notice that I actually died on June 11, 2010. I always thought this might happen. I ran out of time as a big spender runs out of money. Life consists solely of time. I hope each of you spends your time wisely. Do not plan to attend my funeral. There will be none. There will be no wake. I do not wish for you to see me if I cannot see you. Flowers should not be given to the dead. Flowers should be given to the living. Why donát each of you present flowers to someone you love?
I was married twice. The first marriage was to the former Florence Lynn Yates of Trenton, TN in 1951. The second marriage was to the former Elizabeth Ann Jackson of Elkins in 1976. Each of these two ladies preceded me in death.
My two living children are Alan Leon Kingsolver of Elkins and Lisa Lynn Noble of Pensacola, FL. My three stepchildren are Glenn Matthew Taylor of Oklahoma City, OK, Margaret Ann Taylor of McKinney, TX, and Robert Lee Taylor of Charlotte, NC. I consider each of the latter to have been my child. There are five grandchildren of various ages. My sister and my brother have both passed away. My mother died at age 107 in Pinehurst, NC. How is that for distance. She was born before the Wright Brothers flew.
I was born, Merritt Leon Kingsolver, at Sullivan, Indiana, on July 13, 1930. Only my mother and my father thought my birth was important. I was born at the beginning of the Great Depression. Since I had never known another time, I thought it was normal for masses of unemployed men to wander about the country without destination. I did not know the 1930s were so bad until the 1940s arrived.
I graduated from Fort Knox High School in 1948. I received a bachelorás degree from Memphis State College (University of Memphis) in 1952, I had two major fields of study, but the major in history was accidental. In 1963, I received a masterás degree in secondary education from the University of Kentucky.
From 1952 until my retirement in 1995, I had seven careers. Coaching athletic teams and teaching in various high school in Kentucky provided the most enjoyable of times. Organizing community groups into 501(c) (3) tax exempt corporations, and writing or directing the writing of proposals/grant requests to provide funds for their activities was the most fulfilling of times. The terms proposals, grant requests and business plans are synonymous. Each term merely identifies the targeted group(s) from which to request funds. More people today should be doing this type of writing. Every request for funds we ever wrote was fully funded, and we were not very smart. Organizing and directing a company which provided home respiratory care was the most rewarding of times. This activity concluded with my retirement in 1995. The other stuff is not worth mentioning.
