Mrs. Mary J. (Poe) Coontz age 86 years a residence of the Goff Road near Belington departed this life Thursday January 7, 2010 at the home of her daughter June Bolyard and son in law Roger near Coalton. She had been in declining health for the past 8 months.

In 1941 she was united in marriage to Goff E. Coontz who preceded her in death in 1983.

She was born December 7, 1923 at Queens, Upshur County, WV a daughter of the late Thomas J. and Minnie Koon Poe.

Mrs. Coontz is survived by two sisters Sarah Shields of Ohio and Della Ware of Junior, three sons Edward G. Coontz and wife Jennifer of Martinsburg, WV, Eugene N. Coontz and wife Dorothy of Martinsburg, WV, Stanley Lee Coontz and wife Saundra of Belington, WV; three daughters June L. Bolyard and husband Roger of Coalton, WV, (with whom she made her home for the past 7 months), Dorothy M. Smurr of San Antonio, TX, Peggy L. Carpenter and husband Robert of Junior, WV; seventeen grandchildren, Pam Martin, Melissa Elkins, Eric Coontz, Sherry Bolyard, Shelley Gutta, Theresa Fitz, Tina Szahowishi, Daniel Coontz, Tyler Smurr, Sheridan Smurr, Lisa Howell, Brian Carpenter, Kevin Carpenter, Meshach Vincent, Kelly Coontz, Lori Wilson, Devon Moore; twenty six great grandchildren Julie and Hayleigh Martin, Kaleb and Austin Elkins, Cassie and Rain Coontz, Taylor, Caitlin and Bradley Gutta, Cory, Max and Ivy Fitz, Kimberly, Joshua and Patrick Szahowishi, Cooper and Sadie Smurr, Samantha and Kylie Howell, Samantha Esposito and Cory Carpenter, Michael Carpenter, Morgan and Conner Wilson, Cody Coontz and Skyler Moore. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by one sister Pearl Golden, one infant sister Mae and five brothers Edgar Allen, Robert “Jake”, Ira “Buck”, Frank and Charles Poe.

Mrs. Coontz attended the Water Camp School in Barbour County and was a member of the Talbott United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Tygart Valley Dorcas Rebekah Lodge #181 in Belington and a former member of the Talbott Farm Women’s Club. Mary was a homemaker, enjoyed quilting and she will be greatly missed.

Friends will be received at the Talbott Funeral Home 210 Brandenburg St. in Belington from 5 pm to 9 pm on Monday January 11, 2010 and again on Tuesday from 8 am to 11 am. At that she will be moved to the Talbott United Methodist Church where friends may call from 12 to 1 pm. Final rites will be conducted from the church at 1pm with the Pastor Bryan Headley officiating. Interment will follow in the Talbott Cemetery near Belington. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Mt. Hospice 1401 Crim Ave. Belington, WV 26250.
