| Obituary: | Mr. Marvin Lee “Shag” Cross, Sr. age 89 years a lifelong resident of Belington and more recently a resident of the Talbott Personal Care Home in Belington, departed this life 9:09am, Sunday, May 18, 2008 in the Davis Memorial Hospital at Elkins following a period of declining health He was born October 5, 1918 at Sugar Creek near Belington a son of the late Bruce and Elizabeth Mae Cross. On August 2, 1941 at Belington he was united in marriage to the former Kathleen Virginia Board who preceded him in death on August 30, 1997. Mr. Cross is survived by three sons, Marvin L. Cross, Jr. and wife Carol of Dayton, OH, David L. Cross and wife Sue of Philippi, and Donald R. Cross of Quiet Dell. Four grandchildren, Jon David Cross, Kevin Andrew Cross, Kimberly Dawne Seborne, and Brian L. Cross also survive. Additional survivors include four great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters; Hazel Right and Maysel Poling and two brothers, Odbert G. “Dean” Cross and Bernard Cross. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Mr. Cross attended the schools of Barbour County and was a graduate of the Belington High School with the Class of 1938, and was a veteran of the US Army serving during WWII. He was a conductor for the B&O Railroad from which he had retired after 38 years of employment in 1978 and was a charter member of the Laurel Mountain VFW Post #410 of Belington. He was a member of the Belington Masonic Lodge #125 AF&AM for over fifty years and was a 14th and 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason. His hobbies included hunting and fishing and riding his Honda Gold Wing Trike. He faithfully attended the Westside United Methodist Church of Belington where he had been a member for many years. Friends will be received at the Talbott Funeral Home, 210 N Brandenburg St in Belington on Monday, May 19th from 6 to 9pm and on Tuesday until 11am the funeral hour when final rites will be conducted from the funeral home chapel with Rev. Arden Beck and Sister Teresa Reddington officiating. Interment will follow in the Fraternal Cemetery near Belington where the Belington Masonic Lodge will conduct ritualistic Graveside Services and the American Legion Post #44 of Philippi will conduct military Honors. The family ask in lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Animal Friends of Barbour County, PO Box 425, Philippi, WV 26416, or the Rosenbaum Family House, PO Box 8228, Morgantown, WV 26506.
